Adding contact form leads to a Mailchimp audience

Add each lead by email address so returning visitors update the existing contact, map the form's fields to your audience's merge fields, tag them by the form they came from, and only add people who agreed to hear from you. Everyone who just asked a question stays out of your marketing list.

Consent first

A contact form enquiry isn't permission to send a newsletter. Add a consent box to the form, and only pass the lead to Mailchimp when it's ticked. In Mailbag Pro that's a setting on each form's route: only when the consent box is ticked. The free plugin stores the exact consent wording with each entry, so you can show later what someone agreed to.

Map the fields

Mailchimp audiences have merge fields such as FNAME, LNAME and PHONE. Map your form's fields to them once per form. Anything you don't map simply isn't sent — Pro only sends the fields you've chosen, not the whole message.

Tag by source

Tags such as quote-request or website-contact let you segment later: a campaign to people who asked for a quote but didn't buy, for example. Pro applies the tags you set on the route to each contact it adds.

Avoid duplicates

Mailchimp identifies a contact by email address. Pro adds or updates by that address, so the same person sending three forms updates one contact rather than failing on the second attempt.

Double opt-in

For newsletter signups, adding new contacts as pending makes Mailchimp email a confirmation link; they only become subscribed when they click it. It's slower but gives you a cleaner list and stronger proof of consent.

Know when it stops

The expensive failure isn't a lead that errors — it's weeks of leads that never arrived because a key was changed. Mailbag Pro watches each connection and emails you when Mailchimp starts refusing entries, at most once a day, then retries the ones it kept once the connection works. See when the Mailchimp integration stops working.
